About APAI

APAI: A Professional Association Marking 50 Years of Service in 2009

The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana (APAI) is your premier full service asphalt pavement association. Our membership includes the state of Indiana’s leading asphalt contractor/producers, liquid asphalt binder suppliers, laydown contractors, and other supplier/service providers. Since 1959, the association has provided quality services to quality members, and has been a credible source of technical information regarding smooth, quiet, cost-efficient and sustainable asphalt pavements.

In many respects, APAI is the public’s partner in building Indiana’s highway and street infrastructure. Through its committees and executive staff, the association works in close partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), and with many of the state’s cities, towns, and counties. APAI represents the asphalt pavement industry with industry outreach to organizations such as the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT), the Indiana Association of County Commissioners (IACC), the Indiana Section of the American Public Works Association (APWA), the Aviation Association of Indiana (AAI), and the Indiana Recycling Coalition. APAI additionally represents the industry through working partnerships with the Joint Transportation Research Program at Purdue University and the Build Indiana Council.

The Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana is active in the educational community, funding scholarships at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and Purdue University. Since the program’s inception, scholarships totaling over $100,000 have been awarded to young men and women at these Indiana institutions. In addition, educational programs to prepare contractor personnel for INDOT certification are conducted annually at Rose Hulman.

APAI provides the industry and the public with various technical workshops each year, including the Winter Conference/Annual Meeting each December in Indianapolis, and in 2009 held its inaugural Sustainable Pavements Conference with over 150 attendees. APAI also partners with INDOT to offer a series of Regional Meetings each Spring to begin the paving season.

APAI is governed by a 14 member Board of Directors, and is managed by a professional staff of three based in the association headquarters in downtown Indianapolis. APAI works in close partnership on a variety of legislative, technical and regulatory issues with the National Asphalt Pavement Association (www.hotmix.org), a leading construction trade association based in suburban Washington, DC.

Through its extensive committee structure and active member involvement, APAI believes in sharing solutions to common problems, benchmarking best practices, and continuous product improvement. These efforts result in better pavements for our customers.
