Potts Named to Hall of Fame Charles F. Potts, CEO of Heritage Construction & Materials, Indiana, has been named to The Hot-Mix Asphalt Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established to honor those individuals who have made significant contributions of regional and/or national importance to the industry.
Potts is a recognized expert in the field of asphalt materials and construction. He began his career at the North Carolina DOT before joining the Florida DOT, where he worked for 16 years. As the state materials and research engineer and director of construction in Florida, he was responsible for the state’s research involving liquid asphalt, mix design, and flexible pavement design.
Potts was a pioneer in the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and helped develop Florida’s recycling program. He later served as a national spokesman for the Federal Highway Administration to help promote the use of RAP nationwide.
Before accepting his current position at Heritage, Potts worked for 17 years for APAC, moving through several positions of leadership and becoming president of the company in 1992.
Potts served as chairman of NAPA’s board of directors in 2004. He has been active in the oversight of the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) since its inception in 1986, and served as the first chair of NCAT’s Applications Steering Committee, which oversees all research. Potts is a former chairman and current member of the board of directors of NCAT.
He is chairman of the board of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, past chairman of the board of the International Center for Aggregates Research, and past president of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists. He is a member of the board of the National Sand, Stone and Gravel Association.
Potts received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Citadel and a master’s degree in the same discipline from West Virginia University. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University and a registered professional engineer in Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina.
