The program addresses 14 topics: avoiding being struck or crushed, flagger safety, night work, runovers and backovers, operator safety, excavations, electrical hazards, sprains and strains, fall hazards, noise hazards, health hazards, driving, working outdoors, and emergencies.

The program is designed for use both by personnel specializing in safety and health issues and by supervisors with some experience in the arena of worker safety and health.

The downloadable CD includes training materials in all three languages, an instructor manual for "toolbox talks" that can be conducted from the back of a pickup truck, and brochures that can be used as paycheck stuffers. In addition, there are voice-over recordings in both Spanish and Portuguese. The program modules feature many interactive elements that help the worker understand and retain the material, including demonstrations and a game.

This program is intended to help your company enhance workers' awareness and safety. It is a labor-management safety reminder that may be incorporated into your company's safety program. It is not intended as a compliance guide and it is not a substitute for an OSHA 10-hour course.

All the materials have been field-tested with highway workers. They were produced under a grant from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. They were developed by the joint efforts of the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA), the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), and the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA).

A limited quantity of the printed materials is available at no charge from NAPA. To order, please contact Environmental and Safety Services.
