Welcome!

Welcome to the home page of the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana (APA).

We are a fifty year old not-for-profit trade organization representing the interests of the asphalt paving industry in the Hoosier Heartland of  America. APAI is dedicated to promoting the use of asphalt by developing and delivering customer-driven programs to enhance quality and excellence in all aspects of asphalt technology.  Our members and staff firmly believe that the key to growth and prosperity in the industry is continuous quality improvement obtained through active association membership, positive customer relationships, and continual education and training.

Asphaltindiana.org is your one stop shop for advocacy, professional development, research, networking and advancing technology.  Membership helps to ensure that the concerns and viewpoints of the industry are represented by a strong unified voice.  Together, we support the strategic marketing of the many benefits of asphalt. Responsive, professional and focused on quality, APAI is truly The Public's Partner in Building Indiana's Infrastructure.

The Eight Key User/Owner Benefits of Asphalt Construction

Cost Effective - not only does asphalt pavement have the lowest initial cost when compared to other alternative pavement products, but its' life cycle cost (when measured over the entire life of the pavement) are also lower than other competitive pavement products.

Constructibility/Speed of Construction - asphalt pavements constructed during the day are normally ready to have traffic that same day.  This allows better access to adjacent businesses and improved traffic flow through and around the projects reducing user delay while continuing to construct the project.

Smooth - asphalt pavements are the smoothest pavements placed in the country today.

Versatile - asphalt pavements can be tailored to the specific application during the design phase of the project allowing for the unique characteristics of each project.  Design life from 5 years to in excess of 30 years can be accommodated easily.  For cost sensitive projects staged construction can be a viable design alternative with asphalt concrete pavements as a way to accommodate increased traffic flow while remaining sensitive to the structural integrity of the pavement.

Quiet - It is a proven fact that asphalt pavements are among the quietest in the world.  Special asphalt mixes such as open graded friction courses, stone mastic aggregate mixes and rubberized asphalt consistently measure the lowest noise of all pavement types.

Safe - Together with the contrast of color between the white lines and the black pavement and the use of open graded surface course mixes that accelerate drain-down and minimize splash and spray asphalt pavement rove to be the safest pavement alternative.

Durable - With the advent of new design strategies, improved characterization of material performance and improved construction techniques, asphalt concrete pavements can be designed for over 40 year life.  Extensive research demonstrates that properly maintained, longer life asphalt pavement can last perpetually.

Sustainable - Asphalt pavements are 100% recyclable; in fact, asphalt is the most recycled material in the country.  Pavements constructed with recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), often produced using warm mix technology,  are clearly environmentally sustainable for the benefit of all citizens, today and tomorrow.

Hot Asphalt - Better Energy Collector than Solar Panels

Researchers in Massachusetts are working on a technique to turn heat gathered by asphalt into useable energy via water pipes. Their paper, released this week at the International Symposium on Asphalt Pavements and Environment in Zurich, posits that asphalt roads could be better than solar panels in gathering energy.
